The best lawn mower to buy is a question I have been asked during my 30 years of being in the lawn mower business. The type of lawn you have and the type of lawn you want is very important at this point. Buying a cylinder mower for a bumpy lawn will only end in tears for you and your mower. First rule is do you need it to collect the grass if so then keep away from them things that hover. Basic principle of physics is something that needs to blow down to get off the ground isn’t going to be very good at sucking up at the same time. Put it another way if this system worked well your vacuum cleaner would float. Now I know a lot of people buy hover mowers and some actually collected the grass quite well. Strange enough they had boxes or bags on the back just like them other mowers that had wheels and just like them other mowers with wheels you generally go up and down the garden to cut. Swing a hover mower around and it collects very little. So unless you have banks and slopes wheels are best.

Now we move on to the motor, the heart of the mower. Back in the past the best motor sat straight above the blade and the only choice was how big a motor you wanted to power the widest cut you get. Flymo made some wonderful mowers in the eighties big strong vacuum cleaner motors, Black and Decker took tried and tested motors put them into a Lawn Mower and they worked. Qualcast made wonderful cylinder lawn mowers from the Concorde to the Panther but god their attempts at making a rotary bladed machine were bad. Funny Bosch now own Qualcast and they have killed off the good British made cylinder side and have attempted to build cheap build rotary lawn mowers under the Qualcast name. Sometimes knowing your heritage could teach you lessons.

Now the best thing for my business was the invention of belt driven electric lawn mowers. On a cylinder mower this was required to switch the drive from horizontal to vertical. On a Rotary lawn mower the only reason was because almost all motors used by the large brands since the 90’s are crap. Over powered small physical build units costing maybe 5 dollars a pop that have to run at high speeds just to generate any power. Trouble is when you make small motors run fast with more power they create more heat. Heat creates more friction add a belt, add a brake system, add a pulley and you have short run times before the motor is above it’s safe working temperature. Still they normally survive warranty so you buy a new mower every 3 to 4 years.

Lets go back to the eighties when Black and Decker introduced using induction motors formally favoured by Mountfied and Hayter. One model in particular was spectacular the RM40 straight drive from motor to blade 1500 watt induction motor. Crude body and design but wow this mower just cut everything. Having discovered what Mountfied and Hayter already knew they tried to complete but the average lawn mower purchaser looks at the features of a mower and not the heart which is the motor.

Solent Tools has stumbled across a low cost lawn mower with a low cost per year expected life span. In the old days you took a lawnmowers price and divided it by 10. This gave you an idea of the next time you would need to replace it subject to blades and general service.
